Simple ways to support youth-led astronomy
Curiosity is the only requirement. Whether you’re a student eager to explore the stars, a parent cheering from the sidelines, or a community member looking to help, there’s a place for you here. The Youth Astronomers Society of Seattle (YASS) is open to all—no telescope, no experience, no problem. Just bring your wonder.
Hands-On Astronomy
Expensive equipment is not required to begin exploring the night sky. You can identify constellations, track the phases of the Moon, and even catch a glimpse of a planet or two with just your eyes or a pair of binoculars. To get you started, YASS offers beginner-friendly sky guides and throws star parties. Do you want to use a telescope? We can direct you to a local lending program or assist you in borrowing one.
Real Research Opportunities
At YASS, students don’t just learn about science, they do it! Our members work with real data and contribute to real research, from tracking transits of exoplanets to measuring binary stars. No prior experience is necessary, and there are opportunities to write and publish findings, present at science fairs, and work with mentors on worthwhile projects.
A Community That Inspires
Every young scientist has a support system behind them. Attend events, connect with other students outside, or join our community Slack. Volunteers and families also contribute significantly, whether it be by providing rides, distributing snacks, or assisting with outreach initiatives. Big discoveries are aided by even the smallest lift.
