What is YASS?
The Youth Astronomers Society of Seattle (YASS) is a student-led community that brings young people together to explore the night sky and share a love of astronomy. Founded to make astronomy more accessible, YASS hosts star parties, hands-on learning activities, and educational workshops that show how anyone—no telescope or science degree required—can discover the wonders of space. By combining curiosity, collaboration, and creativity, YASS empowers students to learn, teach, and inspire one another, building a community where everyone has a place in the universe.
Building a Community Under the Stars ✨
YASS is for students who are curious about space and want to learn together in a fun, welcoming community. We offer star parties where families and friends can look through telescopes, hands-on workshops that explain real science in simple ways, and opportunities for students to share their own projects and ideas. Whether you’re brand new to astronomy or already exploring on your own, YASS gives you a place to connect, learn, and be inspired by the night sky.
Astronomy Feels Out of Reach
Most students don’t have telescopes, dark skies, or mentors to guide them.
STEM Without Real Research
Teens rarely get chances to publish, present, or do authentic science.
Curiosity Without Community
Young scientists often explore alone, without peers to learn and grow with.
Our Parent Organization
The Seattle Astronomical Society
The mission of the Seattle Astronomical Society (SAS) is to promote meaningful astronomical activities for its members and to provide outreach and astronomy education for the public.
Leadership of the SAS is a group of volunteer members elected by the membership. Together we guide the club with the input of the membership and our mission statement.
Let’s connect and share the sky.
